Elmwood Park Zoo Animal Hospital & Welcome Center
Project Overview
The Elmwood Park Zoo’s Welcome Center and Animal Hospital is part of a multi-phase renovation and expansion of its 73-acre campus, featuring a new 39,000 SF animal hospital and welcome center. The centerpiece of this development is a three-story facility housing the 17,000 SF Frank & Paige Engro Veterinary Health Center. This cutting-edge veterinary facility includes a surgical suite, diagnostic lab, indoor and outdoor recovery wards, and an in-house pharmacy, making it one of only 13 full-scale zoo hospitals in the United States. The center provides advanced medical care for the zoo’s animals and supports partnerships with other local zoos.
The second level of the building offers visitors a unique opportunity to observe veterinary treatments in progress from the welcome center, which also features a coffee shop, interactive exhibits, and a spacious gift shop. On the third level, 8,000 SF of executive and administrative offices, board rooms, and an outdoor terrace support the zoo’s operational and event needs. The facility is complemented by a redesigned entrance plaza with new ticket windows, rest areas, and additional guest amenities, enhancing the visitor experience while supporting the zoo’s mission of conservation and animal care.
