Delray Beach Seaboard Air Line Railway Station Restoration

Project Overview

Designed by architect Gustav A. Maass and constructed in 1927, the railway station is listed on both the National and Local Registers of Historic Places. Following a a near catastrophic fire in February of 2020, the historic Delray Beach Seaboard Air Line Railway Station was ready for a comprehensive renovation and restoration project to restore it to its former glory – albeit with a new purpose. The City of Delray Beach elected to reuse the former train station to house its Wellness Center and Human Resources department.

O’Donnell & Naccarato conducted a structural analysis to assess fire damage before a complete restoration of the interior and exterior – including all new mechanical, plumbing, and electrical systems began. The interior received a fit out of to accommodate a small health clinic and office space, while the exterior of the structure included a partial restoration of exterior walls, along with new exterior walls and roofs to support its new purpose. This project preserves an important historic structure, adapting it for modern use while minimizing environmental impact through restoration rather than new construction.
