O’Donnell & Naccarato Celebrates the Topping Out of Fortville Elementary School in Indiana
O’Donnell & Naccarato celebrated the topping out of the new, 151,000 square-foot Fortville Elementary School, which will serve 800 students from grades K-4 in the Mt. Vernon School District.
The state-of-the art, two-story school building, set to open ahead of the 2025-2026 school year, features operable glass classroom walls that open onto a flexible STEM lab, a centrally-located media lab and a learning riser large enough to accommodate entire grade levels for a presentation or exhibition. Innovative learning opportunities abound, with high-tech teaching tools lining the hallways and a dual-purpose cafeteria capable of hosting both large-group instruction and regular dining.
“O&N is proud to partner with our colleagues and the Mt. Vernon School District to deliver this state-of-the-art project on time and within budget,” said O&N Principal Tom Miltner, PE. “Students at Fortville Elementary will be equipped with the latest and greatest resources, in an innovative space that promotes discovery and growth.”
The building utilizes a steel structural system, with moment frames and braced frames for lateral stability.
O’Donnell & Naccarato worked alongside Indianapolis-based Ratio Architects to provide structural engineering services for the $85 million project. The firm is also working with Greater Clark County Schools on the construction of two new schools in that district.
O’Donnell & Naccarato has provided structural engineering services for dozens of elementary, high school and higher education facilities across the country, including the McNutt Residence Center at Indiana University, the Brearly School in New York City and the MaST II Community Charter School. Other notable projects include the Dayton Educational Campus, Essex County College, Hackensack Meridian Health School of Medicine, New Jersey Institute of Technology Student Housing and Perth Amboy High School in New Jersey, as well as the Penn Charter School Graham Athletics & Wellness Center in Pennsylvania.
