O’Donnell & Naccarato Celebrates Grand Opening of Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters in Norfolk, Virginia
O’Donnell & Naccarato is pleased to announce the grand opening and dedication ceremony of Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters Children Pavilion (CHKD) on September 30, 2022. The new, $224M, 14-story, 364,000 square-foot pediatric mental health hospital and outpatient center is located in Norfolk, Virginia and is the only free-standing children’s hospital in the state. The facility is designed to combine the power of art and healing, in a sun-drenched environment that offers hope and inspiration to all who walk through its doors.
O&N provided structural engineering services for the project in partnership with architect, Array Architects, and construction manager, W.M. Jordan Company. With its partners, CHKD was built using a CM at-risk methodology, but also incorporated many of the approaches used within an Integrated Project Delivery method, a team-work centered approach that ensures timeliness and efficiency at all phases of design, fabrication and construction.
The new mental health hospital and outpatient center includes 60 private inpatient beds, behavioral and specialty clinics, a multi-sensory room, family lounge areas and an expansive rooftop recreation and horticultural center. The pavilion and adjacent eight-story, 596-space precast parking garage both utilized a displacement pile system which provided increased capacity over the more traditional auger cast piles.
“O’Donnell & Naccarato is honored to be a part of such an important project impacting countless children and families in Virginia,” said Anthony Naccarato, PE, SE, F.ASCE, President of O&N. “Our team worked with our partners to complete the building on time and with innovative solutions, which included locating steel cross bracing that worked within both the patient room layout and the open, energetic public spaces below.”
O&N also provided key structural support for the donated artwork featured all across CHKD’s stunning facility, as well as functional design services for the garage, including signage, way-finding and specifications for the Parking Access and Revenue Control Systems (PARCS).
O&N has provided structural engineering services for dozens of hospitals and healthcare facilities across the country, including New York Presbyterian Hospital in New York City, University of Pennsylvania Health System in Philadelphia, IU Health in Indianapolis and Baptist Health in Jacksonville.
